What it is

What is a timing belt replacement?

The timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning in exact time so the valves and pistons never meet. Replacement is a scheduled service item, typically every 100,000 km or so depending on the manufacturer.

We replace the belt as a complete kit — belt, tensioner, idler pulleys and, where it is driven by the belt, the water pump — then verify timing marks, set tension to specification and re-check after rotating the engine by hand.

Why it matters

Why this service is required

• On an interference engine a snapped belt bends valves and can destroy pistons and the cylinder head in a single revolution — the repair often exceeds the value of the car.
• Belts fail with no warning: rubber hardens with age and Brisbane heat, so time matters as much as kilometres.
• Tensioners and idler bearings wear at the same rate as the belt; replacing the belt alone leaves the weakest part in place.
• Doing the water pump at the same time saves paying twice for the same labour.
