The document

What a safety certificate is

A safety certificate is the official Queensland document that confirms a light vehicle met the minimum safety standards required by the Department of Transport and Main Roads on the day it was inspected. It is not a warranty or a condition report; it is a statutory pass against a fixed checklist that covers the systems most likely to affect road safety.

In everyday conversation most Brisbane drivers, dealers and insurers still call this document a roadworthy certificate or RWC. The two terms refer to the same certificate: TMR uses 'safety certificate' on its forms, while 'roadworthy certificate' is the legacy name everyone recognises.

Only an Approved Inspection Station can issue the certificate. MEDAUTO™ is licensed as an AIS and operates entirely mobile, so the inspection is carried out wherever your vehicle is parked.

TMR requirements

When Queensland law says you need one

TMR requires a current safety certificate for three common situations: selling or transferring a registered light vehicle, re-registering a vehicle that has been unregistered, and registering a vehicle brought into Queensland from interstate. Without it the transfer cannot be completed.

For private sellers the certificate lasts two months or 2,000km; for licensed dealers it lasts three months or 2,000km. Because the certificate is dated from the inspection, book only when you are ready to advertise or settle.

Mobile inspections

We come to you across Brisbane

Our inspector arrives at your address with the same equipment a fixed workshop uses, then performs the inspection on-site. There is no need to drive an unregistered car to a shop, arrange a tow, or take time off work. After the pass we lodge the certificate electronically with TMR and give you the certificate number and inspection record.

We regularly travel to Richlands, Inala, Forest Lake, Springfield, Oxley, Darra, Jindalee, Mount Ommaney, Sinnamon Park, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville, Chelmer, Indooroopilly, Taringa, Toowong, Kenmore, Chapel Hill, Milton, South Brisbane, West End, Woolloongabba, Coorparoo, Carina, Carindale, Mansfield, Wishart, Eight Mile Plains, Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills, Runcorn, Kuraby, Underwood, Logan and Ipswich.

AIS licensing

Why an Approved Inspection Station matters

An Approved Inspection Station is a business or individual authorised by TMR to examine light vehicles and issue safety certificates. The licence is not automatic — it requires qualified staff, calibrated equipment, audit compliance and appropriate insurance. Choosing an AIS-licensed examiner protects both the seller and the buyer because the certificate is recognised by TMR and by Queensland Transport.

MEDAUTO™ carries AIS licensing, ARCtick certification for air conditioning work and full public liability insurance. Every inspection is performed to the same TMR checklist used by fixed workshops, but without the inconvenience of dropping the car off.

Digital certificates

Electronic lodgement with TMR

Once the vehicle passes, the result is entered directly into the TMR safety certificate system. The buyer, seller and registry can all see the certificate status through the standard TMR channels. We also provide you with the certificate number and a copy of the inspection result for your records.

Because the certificate is digital, there is no risk of losing a paper form or discovering it is out of date at settlement. The electronic record is the legal document, so you can complete the sale with confidence.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a safety certificate the same as a roadworthy certificate?

Yes. In Queensland the official TMR term is 'safety certificate', while 'roadworthy certificate' or RWC is the common name used by the public, dealers and insurers. They are the same document and prove the vehicle met minimum safety standards on the day of inspection.

When do I need a safety certificate in Brisbane?

You need one when selling or transferring a registered light vehicle, re-registering a car that has been unregistered, or registering a vehicle brought into Queensland from interstate.

How much does a mobile safety certificate cost?

Base fees are $102.70 for cars and sedans, $119 for 4WDs, SUVs and utes, and $129 for vans or light trucks, plus a travel fee that depends on your location. Electronic lodgement with TMR is included. Pricing varies by suburb — get a quote now for your accurate final price.

How long is a safety certificate valid?

For private sellers it lasts two months or 2,000km, whichever comes first. Licensed dealers receive three months or 2,000km. It must still be current on the day the buyer transfers registration.

What does the inspector check?

The TMR checklist covers brakes, steering, suspension, tyres and wheels, lights and reflectors, windscreen and mirrors, seatbelts and anchorages, body and chassis rust, exhaust, emissions and fluid leaks.

Do you come to my home or workplace?

Yes. MEDAUTO™ is a fully mobile Approved Inspection Station. We inspect your vehicle wherever it is parked across Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan, then lodge the certificate electronically with TMR.

Can I get a same-day safety certificate?

In most cases yes. We offer same-day and next-day bookings depending on your location and availability. Early bookings are recommended for urgent sales or transfers.

What happens if the vehicle fails?

We explain every item and provide a clear defect list. Once the repairs are completed you can book a re-inspection. There is no need to tow the vehicle because we return to your location.
