The document

What a safety certificate actually is

A safety certificate confirms a light vehicle met Queensland's minimum safety standards on the day it was inspected. It is not a mechanical warranty or a condition report — it's a statutory pass against a fixed checklist set by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Only an Approved Inspection Station can issue one. MEDAUTO™ is licensed as an AIS and operates entirely mobile, so the inspection happens at your home, your workplace or wherever the vehicle is parked.

If you're buying rather than selling, a safety certificate is not a substitute for a pre-purchase inspection — that's a separate, far more detailed check we also offer.

The checklist

What gets inspected

  • Brakes, including handbrake performance
  • Steering, suspension and wheel bearings
  • Tyres, wheels and tread depth
  • All lights, indicators and reflectors
  • Windscreen, glass and mirrors
  • Seats, seatbelts and anchorages
  • Body, chassis and structural rust
  • Exhaust, emissions and fluid leaks

Validity

Timing your certificate

Book the inspection when you're ready to advertise, not months ahead — the certificate lapses after two months or 2,000km for a private seller, and it must still be current on the day the buyer transfers registration.

If the car has been sitting unregistered, we inspect it where it stands so it never has to be towed or driven without registration.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a safety certificate the same as a roadworthy certificate?

Yes. Queensland's legal term is 'safety certificate'; roadworthy certificate or RWC is the everyday name for the same document.

When do I need a safety certificate?

To sell or transfer a registered light vehicle, to re-register a car that's been off the road, and to register a vehicle brought in from interstate.

How long does a safety certificate last?

Two months or 2,000km for private sellers and three months or 2,000km for licensed dealers, whichever comes first. It must be current on the day of transfer.

How much is a mobile safety certificate?

A $102.70 base fee for cars and sedans, $119 for 4WDs, SUVs and utes, and $129 for vans and light trucks, plus a travel fee that depends on your location. TMR lodgement is included — get a quote now for your suburb.

Do I get a paper certificate?

The certificate is lodged electronically with TMR, which is what the buyer and the registry rely on. We provide your certificate number and a copy of the inspection result for your records.

Can you issue a safety certificate for a caravan or trailer?

Light trailers and caravans over 750kg ATM require an inspection too, and we can quote those on request along with vans and light trucks.

Is a mobile safety certificate legally valid?

Completely. Only an Approved Inspection Station may issue one, and we're licensed as an AIS. The lodgement goes through the same TMR system a workshop uses.

What if my safety certificate expires before the sale?

You'll need a fresh inspection, because the certificate must be current on the transfer date. We can usually re-issue the same day.
